To find the difference between the number of boys and girls, we need to determine the number of girls and boys in the school.

Given that 36% of the students are girls, we can calculate the number of girls by multiplying 36% (0.36) by the total number of students:

    Number of girls = 0.36 * 500 = 180

To find the number of boys, we subtract the number of girls from the total number of students:

    Number of boys = 500 – 180 = 320

The difference between the number of boys and girls is 320 – 180 = 140.

Therefore, the correct answer is (a) 140.

Total number of students is equal to 100% of the class.=500

Percentage of boys in the class=100%-36%=64%

Difference in the number of boys and girls=64%-36%=28%

    Since 100%=500

    28%=500*28/100=140
