    The primary role of leaves in the process of photosynthesis is to capture sunlight and convert it into chemical energy that the plant can use. Here are the key functions of leaves in photosynthesis:

    1. Light absorption: The leaves contain specialized structures called chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a green pigment that absorbs sunlight, particularly the red and blue wavelengths of the visible light spectrum.

    2. Gas exchange: Leaves have small pores called stomata that allow the plant to take in carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and release oxygen (O2) as a byproduct of photosynthesis.

    3. Water transport: The veins in the leaves transport water from the roots to the chloroplasts, where it is used in the photosynthesis reaction.

    4. Photochemical reactions: Inside the chloroplasts, the chlorophyll molecules capture the light energy and use it to power a series of chemical reactions that convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose (sugar) and oxygen.

    5. Storage: The leaves can also store some of the glucose produced during photosynthesis for the plant’s later use as an energy source.
