The nucleus is separated from the cytoplasm by a double-layered membrane called the nuclear envelope. The nuclear envelope consists of an inner and an outer membrane, with a small space between them called the perinuclear space. The nuclear envelope contains nuclear pores, which are protein channels that enable the exchange of molecules between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. These pores regulate the passage of ions, small molecules, and proteins into and out of the nucleus, allowing for communication and transport between the two compartments.
