The hard outer covering of a crab is called its exoskeleton. The exoskeleton is made of chitin, a tough, protective material that provides support and protection for the crab’s soft internal tissues. As the crab grows, it periodically sheds its old exoskeleton in a process called molting, and a new, larger exoskeleton forms in its place. The discarded exoskeleton is often referred to as the crab’s shell, shell casings, or molted shell.
