India and Europe have established connections throughout ancient times. There is evidence of trade and cultural exchange between the two areas as far back as the third millennium BC. In this period, India was a major exporter of spices, textiles, and precious stones while Europe traded in metals, glass, and wine.
It is from this time that the contacts became more intense during the Roman Empire when overland trade routes that interconnect India and Europe flourished. The Silk Road facilitated cultural exchange and trade between India and the Roman world; it was made up of numerous caravan routes stretching from China to Europe. Roman merchants went deep into India establishing trading posts there, at which they also had contacts with local traders.
Vasco da Gama’s discovery of the sea route to India in 1498 CE opened a new chapter in Europe-India relations. Countries such as Portugal, Spain, England, and Holland among others would establish colonies as well as trading posts in India in search for control over spice trade that promised handsome returns on their investments hence commercial empires expansion. It has been a relationship formed through cultural exchanges, migration and trade that forms a great diversity among these two regions today.
