Define Heterotrophs

The form of Nutrition differs depending on the type and availability of food material, as well as how it is obtained by the organism.

Heterotrophs obtain their nutrition from other sources, like plants or animals. They cannot create their food. They do not perform photosynthesis. Except for producers, all the consumers that are herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores are considered heterotrophs and decomposers as well because decomposers also obtain their food from decaying organisms and natural elements.

Heterotrophs are classified into 3 types

Saprotrophs – Saprotrophic nutrition is the nutrition in which an organism obtains nutrition from decaying organic matter of decayed plants and animals.

Example- Fungi, mushrooms, yeast.

Parasyte- it is the nutrition in which an organism gets its food from other living organisms without killing them.

Example- a host may be a plant or an animal parasitic mode of nutrition is observed in several fungi, bacteria, and a few plants like Cuscuta and some animals like Plasmodium, roundworm. These causes diseases like malaria.

Holozoic- the holozoic nutrition is in which an organism takes a complex organic food into its body by the process of ingestion, the ingested food is digested and then absorbed into the body cells by the organism, and then is excreted by different processes.

Example- human, amoeba, animals, etc.
