Importance Of Vowels

What do we understand by vowels? Why is it important to study vowels?

Importance Of Vowels

There are twenty-six letters in the English alphabet; five of them are vowels, and twenty-one of them are consonants. A, E, I, O, and U are the five main vowels. Vowels are a syllabic speech which pronounced without any control over a vocal tract. We can breathe freely while pronouncing any vowel. The word vowel came from a Latin word “vocalis”, in English which means vocal. In English, a, e, i, o, and u represent both vowel sounds and written symbols. But in the Latin writing system, sometimes A, E, I, O, U, Y, and W can be called vowels. Not every letter of the alphabet represents vowels. Specifically, Y and W are also used to state approximant consonants. In English pronunciation, the five letters A, E, I, O, and U can represent a spread of vowel sounds, while the letter Y frequently represents vowels, like gym, happy, thyme, and many more. On the other hand, W is used to represent gliding vowels and some pure vowels at the same time. Vowels have a huge importance in language. The work of vowels in distinguishing one word from another varies from language to language. All languages have a minimum of three phonemic vowels, usually I, A, and U. The number of vowels depends on how they are counted. One of the most common vowels is A. In English, vowels are the most important thing to study; we can not learn English without vowels.

The letters a, e, i, o, and u are known as vowels, whereas the remaining letters of the English Language are known as consonants. According to the definition given in the Cambridge Dictionary, “a vowel is a speech of sound produced by humans when the breath flows out through the mouth without being blocked by the teeth, tongue, or lips.”

We use ‘an’ before words starting with a vowel. For example – an apple, an umbrella, an incident, etc.

A vowel has its importance in the English Language as no word can be formed only by using consonants. For example, the word rsnnc has no meaning and no tone, but by adding the desired vowels, it forms the word resonance. Thus, vowels give the syllable or word its meaning.

The alphabets of the English script is broadly bifurcated into two divisions, namely, Vowels and Consonants. The English script has a total of 26 letters, among which there are five vowels( a, e, i, o, u), and the remaining twenty-one are consonants.

English grammar states that words starting with vowels must be preceded by “an” whereas words starting with consonants must be preceded with “a”.

For example:

An Airplane, an orange, an umbrella, an ice-cream, etc.

A boy, A girl, A man, A chocolate, etc. But there are words which start with a but are preceded by “an;” these are exceptions and are so because of their phonetical

For example:

An hourglass, An hour

They begin with the consonant “h,” but when pronounced, they seem to be starting with “o” as the letter “h” is silent and, therefore, are preceded by “an”.
