  Newton’s first law, also known as the law of inertia, states that:

  An object at rest will remain at rest, and an object in motion will continue moving at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

  In other words, an object will maintain its state of motion (either at rest or in uniform motion) unless an external force is applied to it. This means that an object will not change its velocity (either speed or direction) unless a net force is acting upon it.

  The key points of Newton’s first law are:

  1. An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
  2. An object in motion will continue moving at a constant velocity unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
  3. The state of motion of an object will not change unless a net force is acting on it.

  This law explains why it’s difficult to get a stationary object to start moving, or to stop a moving object. It also explains why objects seem to “resist” changes in their state of motion. This resistance to change in motion is called inertia.
