Importance of Opposition Parties

How do opposition parties help in the administration of government?

Importance of Opposition Parties

The word democracy means the Government of the people, for the people, and by the people. In this democratic system of government, everyone has the right to elect their leader. It follows the principle of Universal adult franchise. This means every citizen above the age of 18 years has the right to vote and elect their representatives. So, if there is only one party, how will a person get the right to choose? There will be no option left for him.

On the other hand, democracy also allows any legal citizen of India with a sound mind and no criminal charges against them to stand as a representative in the election. This means even the common man has the right to contest the elections the whether from a party or independently. So, in the true essence of democracy, an opposition party or a candidate must be present. So what is the work of the independent candidate who hasn’t won the election or the opposition party?

They perform the most important task of democracy. They criticize the current government for their wrong policy anything else if done wrong by them. This factor of checking the government is very useful while running the administration of such a vast and populous country like India.

Without the interference of the opposition, the current government cannot function properly. It requires input and criticism from parties that have not won the election. Therefore, both the government and an opposition party are needed for the functioning of a democracy properly.
