Explanation On Gandhi Ji

Impossible, Matangini Hazra (1870-1942), the famous Gandhian leader and a humanist. Matangini Hazra was born in a small village called Hegela near Tamluk Thana in West Bengal. The daughter of a poor farmer, she had no access to education in her father’s house. Married at a very young age, she became a widow at the age of eighteen without any children. She played an active role in the struggle for independence from colonial rule and followed Mahatma Gandhi’s motto.

In 1932, she participated in Gandhi’s Civil Disobedience Movement (Salt Satyagraha), producing salt at the Alinan Salt Center, and was arrested and imprisoned for violating the Salt Act. After her arrest, she was forced to walk a long distance as part of her punishment. She was also involved in the Tax Bandha movement, and when she went to protest against the illegal establishment of the governor’s office at the district court, she was arrested again. She was convicted and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and sent to Baharampur Prison.

After her release from prison, she was actively involved in the activities of the Indian National Congress. She started spinning thread and Khaddar (coarse cloth) as a true follower of Gandhiji. In 1933, she became a member of the Mahakuma Conference, where police opened fire on protesters. She was involved in humanitarian causes, helping affected men, women, and children, especially during a smallpox epidemic. People affectionately referred to her as “Gandhi Buri” (elder Mrs. Gandhi).

During the Quit India Movement, residents planned to attack Thanas, courts, and other authorities. At the age of 72, she led a procession through the village. The police opened fire, and a bullet hit her in the arm. Undeterred, she continued, begging the police not to shoot. Another bullet struck her head. She passed away, becoming a symbol of the anti-colonial movement, holding the flag of freedom.
