Communication And Its Importance

The word communication has been derived from the Latin word communis, which means to share or exchange. So, Communication is the process of sharing or exchanging information, ideas, feelings, or thoughts.

In other words, it is the act of transferring information from one person to another. The person who sends the message is called the encoder/ sender, and the person who receives the message is known as the receiver/ Decoder. There are two types of Communication:-

1. Verbal communications include speaking skills..

2. Non–verbal communication:- Communication via writing skills.

Now, let’s understand the importance of Communication in our day-to-day life:-

1. Communication brings people together, closer to each other.

2. We learn different Communication skills like listening, writing, reading and speaking as well.

3. It bridges the gap between individuals and groups through the flow of information and understanding between them.

4. It enables us to pass information to other people.

Communication is a process through which a message is circulated from 1 person to another through different mediums. Communication takes place in 2 ways.
• Verbal communication – This communication takes place when words are used to convey thoughts and messages between 2 people
• Non-verbal communication – This takes place when signs and symbols are used to exchange messages between 2 or more people.
Non-verbal communication includes gestures, postures, personal appearance, body language, eye contact, etc.
Each of these plays a very important part in communicating our message to the person in front of us. It expresses our thoughts more than our words. Sometimes, we say something, but our body language says something else. In this case, body language should be believed as it cannot be faked.
1. Personal appearance:- Personal appearance plays a very important role as our personality and dressing speaks about us before we speak. It also represents the organisation we represent.
2. Gestures: Gestures deal with the hand movements that we use to express our message. Eg- we touch our index fingure and thumb to show perfect.
3. Postures- Postures include body movement to express a message. E.g.- shrugging our shoulders when we are bored or iritated.
4. Eye contact- Eye contact plays a very important role in showing our confidence in a conversation. While in a meeting or an interview, we maintain eye contact with the interviewer it shows how confident we are about ourselves.
Some of the nonverbal signs used worldwide:-
1. Thumbs up-
• The signal for approval or agreement is commonly found in European and American cultures.
• In many Islamic and Asian countries, it is considered a major insult.
2. V for Victory-
• The V sign with an inward-facing palm is also considered an insult in the UK and South Africa.
