Mitochondria is known as powerhouse of the cell because the mitochondria is an organalles of the cell whose function in the cell is to create energy which will be utilised by the other organalles of the cell to perform their function such as storing of food, transportation and many more basic function therefore to provide energy in a cell for their function gives it the name of powerhouse of the cell as powerhouse in our locality gave electricity to the homes to perform their basic functions

As mitochondria creates the energy for the cell in the form of ATP (Adenosine tri phosphate) which is also known as energy currency of the cell that is utilised by cell to perform it’s basic functions so for providing energy to cell gives it the name of powerhouse .
