How to Use Your Cutout Printable: Let’s Get Started!
This is designed to be super simple. You don’t need to be a craft expert—I promise!
What You’ll Need:
-
A printer and paper
-
A pair of child-safe scissors
-
Glue stick or school glue
-
(Optional)Â Crayons or markers for coloring!
Step-by-Step Fun:
-
Print It Out:Â Click that download button and print the scene page and the character page. I find slightly thicker paper works great, but regular printer paper is totally fine.
-
Color Your World (Optional):Â This is a great way to start! Let your child color in the background scene and the characters first. It makes the activity last longer and adds a personal touch.
-
Time to Cut! Carefully cut out the characters and objects. The effort is what counts. Pro tip: If your child is new to scissors, help them practice making small “snips” first.
-
Create Your Story:Â This is the best part. Arrange the cutouts on the background scene. Ask questions:Â “Where should this girl go? Is she kicking the ball?”
Take the Fun Further! Creative Extension Ideas
The learning doesn’t have to stop when the last piece is glued. Here are a few ideas we love:
-
Tell Me All About It:Â Ask your child to narrate the story of their scene. “What happens next?” This is a huge boost for language development.
-
Find the Props:Â Look around the house for small toys (a real ball, a dollhouse teddy bear) to add to the scene and make it 3D!
-
Mix and Match:Â Have other printables? Why not have a character from another set come to visit the playground?
-
Letter of the Day: Is the letter “B” this week’s focus? Point out the “ball” in the scene! It connects hands-on fun with early literacy.
A Quick Tip from Our Experience
In my years of working with little ones, I’ve found that the less perfect we try to make it, the more fun everyone has. If the girl gets glued a little crooked, she’s just dancing! If the ball is cut with a jagged edge, it must be extra bouncy. The goal is the process and the pride they feel in their finished creation, not a flawless piece of art.
