When students first run into different grammar structures that sometimes are quite different than their native language, a wave of emotion sweeps through them. 1. Does the word have two syllables?
2. Do you hear a short vowel in the first syllable?
3. Do you hear one consonant sound between the first vowel and the second vowel?
4. Then double the middle consonant.

Students also write a separate list of the words that do not follow the Rabbit rule whenever they encounter them. Examples of these exceptions are cab/in, med/al, rob/in, mel/on, lem/on, and sev/en, and are mentioned below. ‘Rabbit’ words are VC/CV words, whereas ‘tiger’ words are V/CV words.
