Was Ashoka a good ruler?

Ashoka a good ruler

Ashoka, the Mauryan emperor, is widely regarded as a good ruler due to his transformative embrace of Buddhism and commitment to nonviolence and moral governance. While his early reign saw military conquests, notably the Kalinga War, marked by brutality, Ashoka underwent a profound change of heart. His conversion to Buddhism influenced policies promoting peace, tolerance, and welfare for his subjects. Edicts across the empire propagated ethical principles and humanitarian values. Despite earlier military actions, Ashoka’s later commitment to dharma, or righteous conduct, and efforts to foster a just and compassionate society contribute to his positive historical assessment as a ruler who transitioned from a conqueror to a promoter of moral virtues.
