The Ajanta caves are considered to be built in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. It is one of the masterpieces of Buddhist religious art which was built nearly in the Gupta period. The caves of Ajanta are based on the vertical cliff near the left bank of the river Waghora. The caves are divided into two phases, the first phase covers ( caves 8,9,10,12,13, and 15A) where Buddha is worshipped in an an iconic/symbolic form. In the second phase, Buddha was worshipped in an icon/idol form. It is a typical achievement in ancient Buddhist rock-cut architecture. The caves manifest the development of Buddhism through the architecture and sculptures. It also provides information on the present-day civilization.
