As the Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin famously said, “<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one”. One should develop a habit of reading early on in life because it is such an immersive medium. It can increase your attention span, equip you with an impressive vocabulary, and teach important life lessons. It’s an incredible way to pass your time, gain knowledge and simultaneously improve your communication skills. So, it’s a win-win situation.

With that being said, reading is definitely a habit that might require some time to get accustomed to and enjoy it at the same time. You can start with some children’s classics like Secret Seven or Famous Five by Enid Blyton. I get it. I can already sense the questions like, “Why would you suggest books meant for children to teenagers or adults” or “What can one possibly learn from these books?” And my reply to those, my friend, will be that it’s okay to enjoy reading books meant for children. There’s nothing to be ashamed of. On the contrary, those books often teach some important life lessons. They teach values like empathy, kindness, celebrating friendships, confidence, etc.

With the fictional genre, you can live in the moment and embark on an adventure with the characters. You can cherish them, celebrate their victories, support them in sadness and also learn from their mistakes. And, somewhere down the line if you figure that fiction is not for you, then you can try the non-fiction genre as well. They are the real-life incidents shared by the authors. There’s a lot to pick from: autobiographies, self-help books, memoirs, financial advice books, etc.

No matter what you choose or what genre you pick, reading a book would always be such a phenomenal experience because you are never alone while you read and it’s a journey altogether. And when you finally finish reading and put down your book, you will have a lot of fond memories, experiences and lessons to take away with you.
