The first king of England is generally considered to be Æthelstan, who reigned from 927 to 939. He was the son of King Edward the Elder and the grandson of Alfred the Great. Æthelstan is often credited with establishing England as a unified kingdom and is sometimes referred to as the first king of all England. Prior to Æthelstan, the territory now known as England was divided into several smaller kingdoms ruled by different kings. Æthelstan’s reign marked a significant consolidation of power and authority in the region.
