The Vedic peoples, who lived in ancient India during the Vedic period (1500-500 BCE), primarily used copper as their first metal. Copper was abundant in the region and had various practical applications, such as making tools, weapons, and ornaments. The early Vedic texts, known as the Rigveda, mention the extraction and use of copper. However, it’s worth noting that the Vedic people were also familiar with other metals like gold and silver, which were highly valued, but they were likely used more for decorative purposes rather than practical ones. Iron, which became more prevalent later on, was not extensively used during the early Vedic period.
