Think of linking verbs like “equals signs.” They don’t show action like “jump” or “run.” Instead, they link the subject to a description or state.

    For example:

    • “She is happy.” (The linking verb “is” connects “she” to the state of being “happy.”)
    • “The flowers smell sweet.” (Here, “smell” links “flowers” to the description “sweet.”)

So, when you see a verb that doesn’t show action but connects the subject to a description, it’s likely a linking verb showing a state of being.
