The hardest natural substance on Earth is diamond. Diamond is a form of carbon that has a unique atomic structure, which gives it exceptional hardness. It is composed of carbon atoms arranged in a crystal lattice structure, with each carbon atom bonded to four neighboring carbon atoms in a tetrahedral arrangement. This strong bonding makes diamond extremely hard and resistant to scratching.
Diamond has a Mohs hardness scale rating of 10, which is the highest possible rating on the scale. The Mohs scale is a system that measures the relative hardness of minerals based on their ability to scratch other materials. Diamond can scratch all other materials on the scale, including substances like corundum (which includes materials like sapphires and rubies) and topaz.
It’s worth noting that while diamond is the hardest natural substance, there are synthetic materials such as certain types of industrial-grade diamonds and some ceramics that can be even harder.
