Our location is dry all year, and the blazing heat may take its toll on anybody, especially children and those who work up a sweat — exercise may cause you to lose up to 40% of your body’s water.
Fluids are necessary for the important organs to function properly. On the other hand, dehydration can be mild, moderate, or severe depending on how much fluid is lost and not restored in your body. Severe instances may necessitate a trip to the hospital for IV fluids and may result in renal damage or nervous system problems.
Dehydration is also more common among the elderly. Older adults are more likely to forget to drink water or to be unaware of their thirst. They may also overlook dehydration prevention in the same manner that a younger person might. If you have a parent or an elderly person in the house, be aware of this.
HOW MUCH WATER ONE SHOULD DRINK DAILY
Every person should drink 8 glasses of water per day. Electrolytes are especially important if you’re working out hard or experiencing dehydration symptoms like headaches or lightheadedness.
Water is good, but you also need electrolytes when you’re dehydrated, the Doctor explains. However, stay away from diet drinks. Sugar aids electrolyte absorption.
WAYS TO STAY HYDRATED
1.Do not wait to feel thirsty – You’re already slightly dehydrated by the time you feel thirsty. When the weather is hot, drink plenty of water throughout the day and drink more fluids than normal, especially if you’re active.
2.Add something (flavor) to your water – the time you think you are thirsty, you’re already slightly dehydrated. Drink lots of water throughout the day and more fluids than usual when the weather is hot, especially if you’re active.
3.Eat water-rich fruits and vegetables – Water is abundant in certain fruits and vegetables, in addition to beneficial elements. Fruits having a high water content include watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, and pineapples. Cucumbers, leafy greens, radishes, celery, and tomatoes are all high in water.
4.Stay at home during hot days – Stay indoors in an air-conditioned atmosphere on really hot days. Try a shopping mall, movie theatre, or public library if you don’t have air conditioning at home. Avoid sun exposure, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s rays are at their peak. Plan outdoor activities for early in the morning or late in the evening.
5.Wear clothes according to the weather – Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothes that allow your skin to breathe. Stick with lighter colors since dark hues absorb heat. In the heat, wear a wide-brimmed hat to keep your head cool and lots of sunscreens to avoid sunburn, which can raise your skin temperature and make it more difficult to stay cool.
