Germany invades Belgium and Luxembourg in August 1914 – This brings Britain into the war on the side of the Allies.
Battle of the Marne in September 1914 – The Allies halt the German advance into France, marking the start of the trench warfare that would characterize much of the war.
Gallipoli Campaign from 1915-1916 – An unsuccessful Allied attempt to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople.
Battle of Verdun in 1916 – One of the longest and most brutal battles of the war, resulting in over 300,000 casualties.
Battle of the Somme in 1916 – Another major battle that resulted in over 1 million casualties.
Entry of the United States in April 1917 – The U.S. joins the war on the side of the Allies after a policy of neutrality.
Russian Revolution in 1917 – The Bolshevik revolution leads Russia to withdraw from the war.
Entry of the United States in 1917-1918 – American troops help turn the tide of the war in favor of the Allies.
