Photosynthesis is a process that happens in plants, and it’s super important because it’s how plants make their own food. Just like humans need to eat food to get energy, plants make their own food to consume and survive.

Now, let’s break down how photosynthesis works. There are 3 main things that plants need for photosynthesis: sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water. These act like the ingredients for their food-making process.

First, plants use their leaves to capture sunlight. We know how sunlight is made up of different colours, like a rainbow. Now, plants have a special pigment called chlorophyll, which helps them absorb sunlight.

Once the plants have captured sunlight, they also need carbon dioxide from the air. If you don’t know — carbon dioxide is the gas we breathe out and plants breathe in. Plants take in carbon dioxide through tiny pores on their leaves called stomata.

Next, plants need water. They have roots that absorb water from the soil, like how we drink water through a straw. The water travels from the roots all the way up to the leaves.

Inside the leaves, there are tiny structures called chloroplasts. These chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, the pigment we talked about earlier. Using the energy from sunlight, the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts helps the plant combine carbon dioxide and water. This combination creates a special sugar called glucose, which is the plant’s food.

But the plant doesn’t just make glucose for itself. It also produces oxygen as a byproduct. Oxygen is the gas we breathe in, so plants actually help keep our air clean and breathable. That’s why we all always say to plant more and more trees and plants!

So, to sum it all up, photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make their own food (glucose) and release oxygen into the air. It’s like a power plant inside every plant that keeps them alive and provides us with fresh air to breathe.
