As we all know that plants are immobile. They are different from animals. Both male gamete and female gamete are immobile and thus are incapable of copulating with each other. They need a vector for reproduction. Therefore plants use the method of pollination in order to bear the offsprings. It is a process where pollen grains are picked from an anther, which is the male part of a flower, and transferred to the flower’s female part called the stigma. Pollination can work happen successfully, only if, the pollen grains are transferred from the same species of flower.
Types of Pollination:
All plants having flowers completely dependent on the process of pollination for reproduction. Two types of pollination are there:
1. Self Pollination
2. Cross-Pollination
1. Self-Pollination:
In Self-pollination, the pollen grains fall directly from the anther of the flower into the stigma of the same flower. It is regarded as the primary type of pollination because it includes a single flower. This process is quite simple and fast. It leads to a reduction in genetic diversity as the sperm and egg cells are present in the same flower and share some genetic information.
2. Cross-Pollination:
It is considered as a complex type of pollination that allows the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of the flower into the stigma of another flower. This process leads to an increase in genetic diversity because different flowers will share and combine their genetic information to create unique offspring. The pollen grains from one flower to other flowers are carried by different agents like wind, insects, birds, etc.
There are different types of cross-pollination:
1. Anemophily: Pollination by Wind.
2. Zoophily: Pollination by Animals.
3. Anthropophily: Artificial Pollination.
