Storms and hurricanes are similar in basic ways. Both produce powerful, rotating winds – and both can leave the path of death and destruction. But hurricanes and typhoons also vary in complex ways, including their size and length and how they form, when and where.
The main difference between storms and hurricanes is how large they are and how long they last. Storms are usually hundreds of feet wide, with strong winds and heavy rains throughout the region. The deadliest hurricane ever to hit the United States was Sandy in 2012, 1,000 miles [1,000 km] wide when it struck New York and New Jersey, causing more than $ 70 billion in damage and more than 175 deaths.
Storms are usually no more than a few meters wide – although the single twister that hit central Oklahoma in 2013 was more than two miles wide.
Storms can last for days or weeks. Storms usually last no longer than a few minutes.
