River Ganga is one of the most famous rivers in our country India. It is considered as a holy river for the people of India. People from all over the world worship the river Ganga as the sacred river of India. the River Ganga has a religious background in Hindu Mythology.

According to ancient history, a story is there behind the sacred powers of the river Ganga. King Bhagirath had some ancestors who had committed some immense sins. To cleanse his kingdom from the people who were involved in bad deeds, he meditated to appeal Goddess Ganga to life. It was believed that people could wash away their sins by bathing in the river and attain forgiveness.

The river Ganga is formed by the combination of two main tributaries- Bhagirathi and Alaknanda at Devprayag. Bhagirathi originates from the Himalayan glacier Gangotri whereas Alaknanda springs from Nanda Devi i.e. the northern peak of the Himalayas. Though Alaknanda and Bhagirathi are the two main tributaries of the Ganga, it is believed that Ganga actually rose from Gaumukh, which is to the southeast of Gangotri.

It is necessary to know that river Ganga flows through densely populated and productive areas of the Northern Subcontinent of India. The river provides livelihood to a number of people. Further, there are numerous birds who rely on it for their habitat. The river Ganga is home to more than 140 species of fishes and 90 species of amphibians. That is the sole reason why it is unbearable to see this sacred river deformed with the burden of human and industrial waste.

Although measures are being taken by the government to clean the river Ganga and in no time, it will again be the cleanest river of India. People should understand not to dump their human and industrial waste into the rivers because many people depend on rivers for their livelihood.
