Cause of Cyclone

What is the cause of cyclone? How can we prevent it.

Cause of Cyclone

A cyclone is an air mass that rotates around strong centers of low atmospheric pressure and occurs on a large scale.

Some points we need to remember about cyclones is:

1. When water is heated, it will form water vapor.

2. This heat is released into the atmosphere, converting the water vapor into raindrops.

3. The heat is released again, warming the surrounding air, resulting in the air rising up. Thus decreasing the air pressure.

4. Hence, cooler air from the surroundings replaces the warm air.

5. This process is repeated till a low-pressure zone is created with surrounding high-speed winds.

6. This is called a Cyclone. It depends on wind speed, direction, temperature, and humidity.

Cyclones in the USA are called hurricanes, whereas in Japan, it is called typhoons.

There are not many human resources to completely prevent it, but we can take measures to minimize the cost of life as well as property. The points are listed below:

1. Planting trees to prevent cyclone damage. This method will help us to reduce frontal damage caused by deflecting and redirecting wind.

2. Reduce the height of taller trees. Planting a group of trees and tall shrubs together can help divert the wind through funneling. This will reduce the pressure on the trees and move the wind away from our home.

3. Spreading awareness among the people. Maintaining a regular update of weather conditions through broadcast and internet news can prevent us from getting into calamities.

4. Planning ahead: Identify the possible locations of refuge shelters and routes to take to be guided and have easy access to aid kits or survival tools beforehand.

5. Utilities: Identify power control panels at home, gas piping, and control valves, all these to be shut off in event of calamities.

6. Life support training program. At least train more than 2 family members in life-saving exercises.

Cyclones have a great effect on the marine life and sea transport systems. Most of us would have seen cyclones in movies and other medias. The one puzzling question which arises at this context is ‘ how cyclones occur? ‘ . From a scientific point of view cyclones occur due to the simultaneous occurring of natural phenomenas in the surface of the ocean. The air at the surface should be warm and moist. This warm air raises from the surface of the ocean towards the sky . As the warm air raises , it leaves an area of low pressure under it . The cold air near the surface moves to this space . And the process continues cyclically . This leads to the whole condition of clouds and atmosphere to move cyclical motion and leads to the formation of cyclone. The cyclone begins at a spot and the center of the cyclone known as eye where the rotation is extreme. When the cyclone hits the land , the speed is reduced gradually due to the absence of energy from the ocean .
