What is chlorophyll?

Explain-chlorophyll

As we all know that plants can make their food, and therefore, they are known as autotrophs. This ability of plants to make their food helps sustain living organisms on the planet Earth. The process by which plants make their food is known as photosynthesis. Photosynthesis forms an integral part of the function of plants. In this process, plants use raw materials such as sunlight, water and carbon dioxide from the air and chlorophyll pigment present in the leaves of the plant to make their food. Therefore, we can conclude that chlorophyll is a very important pigment that helps plants in making their food and without which It wouldn’t be possible for plants to prepare their food. This pigment is present in the leaves of the plant and helps the plant to tap sunlight and use the energy from it.

Chlorophyll is the molecule that absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to synthesise carbohydrates from CO and water.

The chlorophyll pigment is very important for living organisms and not only for plants as if plants do not prepare food the humans will also not be able to get food and similarly all the animals will also die of starvation. Since plants form the most integral part of the food chain therefore chlorophyll pigment forms one of the most important components of human as well as plant life.

It is because of the chlorophyll pigment that the leaves of the plant look green. The colour variation is due to different amounts of chlorophyll pigment present in the leaves. Some plants have large amounts of chlorophyll in their leaves, while others may have less.
