Explain Cyclone & Its Impacts on the Environment

What are cyclones? How do they affect our environment?

Explain Cyclone & Its Impacts on the Environment

Cyclone:

A cyclone is a natural phenomenon where it is found that a low-pressure condition is generated around high-speed, revolving winds. The revolving winds are super strong storms. This windy condition tends to travel inwards always. Collectively, if we understand this scenario, we will understand that they are nothing but the occurrence of collective storms.

The place of occurrence can be land or water. These can even occur in various regions/climates of the world.

Types:

a) Tropical Cyclones:

When the occurrence of cyclone takes place around the tropical regions of the earth, then it is known as tropical cyclones

b) Polar Cyclones:

As the name suggests, they occur in the polar regions of the world. Hence, they are called such.

c) Mesocyclones

These are not exactly cyclones, but they are somewhat in between storms and cyclones. These eventually result in forming tornados

According to their strength of destruction and power of their condition, they are further classified into more categories:

1. Minimal

2. Moderate

3. Extensive

4. Extreme

5. Catastrophic

FORMATION:

For a cyclone to form, there must be a formation of low-pressure conditions over a particular area, at first.

When the ocean is warm, a layer of hot air or sheet of hot air is formed on the surface. As we know, hot air always tends to rise. Thus, here also it evaporates and moves up the surface. When it does, it causes an air gap or low air pressure condition. The gap creates a pressure rush, and the air from the surrounding higher pressure tends to move to the low-pressure hole. But then this air transfers and evaporates too.

This process keeps on repeating itself. The surrounding wind system gets disrupted, creating a lot of storms that are moving/rotating at high speed. The high-speed force creates the eye at the center, which is a low-pressure condition, and a high-speed storm surrounds the condition.

Hence, a cyclone is generated.

Impact of cyclones:

1. Creating landslides in the tropical ecosystems.

2. Hurricanes may be formed when there are extensive conditions imposed.

3. Excessive rainfall and crop damage.

4. People’s lives are directly affected.
