Description
This fun fruit and vegetable lacing activity helps children develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Children cut out the cards and thread yarn or shoelaces through the marked holes. Colorful fruit and vegetable pictures encourage easy recognition and naming. It is a simple hands-on activity for building early sewing and threading skills.
Materials Needed
- Printed fruit and vegetable lacing cards
- Child-safe scissors
- Hole punch
- Yarn, wool, ribbon, or colorful shoelaces
- Tape
- Cardboard for extra strength
Preparation
- Download and print the lacing cards on cardstock or paste them onto cardboard for strength.
- Cut each fruit or vegetable along the outer dashed line and punch holes through the white circles.
- Cut yarn, ribbon, or a shoelace to a suitable length and tape the end for easier threading.
- Tie or secure one end to the first hole before starting the activity.
How to Play
Option 1: Basic Lacing Activity
- Choose one fruit or vegetable card and hold the card in one hand and the yarn in the other.
- Push the yarn through the first hole and gently pull it through.

Teaching Tips
- Introduce and name each fruit and vegetable before starting the activity.
- Demonstrate how to push the yarn through one hole and pull it gently from the other side.
- Use thick yarn or shoelaces for beginners because they are easier for small hands to hold.
- Add tape to the yarn tip to create a firm threading end.
- Encourage children to use one hand to hold the card and the other hand to lace.
- Use words such as in, out, through, pull, hole, around, fruit, and vegetable during the activity.
- Do not focus on perfect stitching for beginners. Allow children to explore the threading movement at their own pace.
- Always supervise young children while using scissors and a hole punch.
Reusable Activity Idea
For long-term classroom or homeschool use:
- Print the cards on thick cardstock.
- Laminate each page for extra durability.
- Cut around the dashed outline after laminating.
- Use a hole punch to reopen all the marked lacing holes.
- Provide colorful shoelaces or thick yarn for repeated practice.
- Store each lacing card with its yarn in a labeled envelope or zip-lock bag.
- The cards can be reused in fine motor centers, preschool activity stations, quiet-time activities, or practical life lessons.
