This fun and interactive Popsicle Stick Pattern Matching Activity helps children develop visual discrimination, color recognition, pattern sequencing, and fine motor skills. Children will prepare colorful popsicle sticks by matching the colors shown on the pattern cards. They will then arrange cups in the correct positions and place the colored popsicle sticks on top to recreate each pattern exactly as shown.

Materials Needed

• Printed worksheet pages
• Child-safe scissors
• Cardboard or thick cardstock (optional for durable pattern cards)
• Glue stick
• Plain popsicle sticks
• Colored markers or paint
• Paper cups

Instructions

1. Download and print all the worksheet pages.
2. If desired, paste the pattern card sheets onto cardboard or thick cardstock for extra durability.
3. Allow the glue to dry completely.
4. Carefully cut out each pattern card along the outer dashed cutting lines.
5. Color the popsicle sticks to match the colors shown on the pattern cards.
6. Arrange the paper cups on a flat surface in the same grid layout shown on the pattern cards.
7. Choose one pattern card and place it beside the cups.
8. Observe the pattern.
9. Place the colored popsicle sticks across the cups to recreate the same pattern shown on the selected pattern card.
10. Remove the popsicle sticks and repeat the activity with the remaining pattern cards.

How to Play

Option 1: Match the Pattern

• Select one pattern card.
• Observe the arrangement of the colored lines.
• Recreate the same design using the colored popsicle sticks and paper cups.

Option 2: Complete Every Pattern

• Finish one pattern card.
• Remove the popsicle sticks.
• Choose another card and recreate the new design.
• Continue until all the patterns have been completed.

Option 3: Speed Challenge

• Pick any pattern card.
• Set a timer.
• Try to recreate the pattern accurately before the time runs out.

Option 4: Memory Challenge

• Look at a pattern card for a few seconds.
• Turn it over.
• Try to recreate the pattern from memory using the cups and popsicle sticks.
